The New Mexico desert is home to a military installation where the new G-Bomb is being tested. The weapon is the brainchild of Dr. Bruce Banner, who refuses to share its secret with anyone, including his assistant Igor. After the countdown has begun, Dr. Banner spots a teenager driving out into the test area. Banner asks Igor to delay the countdown while he gets the teenager to safety. However, unbeknownst to Banner, Igor is actually a Russian spy, who holds his tongue in hopes of taking over Banner's project. Banner manages to get Rick Jones safely into a trench, but is caught in the blast himself. Both Banner and Jones are held for observation. When night falls, Banner transforms into a large, grey creature that doesn't like being imprisoned and escapes by tearing down a wall. The military panics at the sight of the monster, and soldiers deploy to stop it. The Hulk, however, can shrug off collisions with jeeps and gunfire as easily as a regular person shrugs off a moquito bite. The Hulk breaks into Banner's home to find Igor is already there, searching for Banner's formula. The Hulk easily defeats him, and transforms back into Banner at sunrise. Rick Jones, who has followed Hulk all night, covers for Banner, since Banner was the only man who ever helped out Rick. Igor is captured, but the military missed a transmitter on his thumbnail, which he uses to contact the communist scientist known as the Gargoyle. The Gargoyle comes to America the following night, and captures Rick Jones and the Hulk. Deducing the connection between Hulk and Banner when daybreak hits, the Gargoyle recruits Banner to help transform himself back into a normal human being. Feeling that this has freed him from his communist masters, he helps the pair escape, and destroys the Russian lab.
